In our society it is not the norm for people to be taught to value - TopicsExpress

In our society it is not the norm for people to be taught to value themselves intrinsically as spiritual beings. Instead, people are taught that they must act in certain ways to gain the acceptance and approval of family, friends, teachers, peers, and the Creator. Thus, insecurity and a lack of belief in ones own innate value, beauty, and power are present in most people, whether they are conscious of this or not. To compensate for that people use a variety of defense mechanisms, which include escaping and avoiding things that stir their discomfort or insecurity, retreating into a fantasy world, using addictions to numb or manipulate their feelings, and creating superficial personas to impress others or relate to the world around them. It is helpful for us to be honest with ourselves and observe our own patterns to see our defense mechanisms and confront the core beliefs that lie beneath them. - JS
