In persuasion class there was an activity where we had to persuade the class to vote for us to win the $10 from the teacher. we each had to go up in front of the class and say why we should get the $10. One guy went up and said you see Im anorexic and really hungry so I should get the $10 so I can go get a Big Mac. He walked away laughing and looking all cocky. I was fuming. I decided to ditch my persuasive argument, walked up to the podium and said I should get the $10 so I can donate it to someone who has a legitimate eating disorder and cant afford treatment. Instantly the whole class erupted in ohhhhhh! I smirked at that kid and took my seat. Thats right. Ive got sass. After class I approached him and said its not funny to joke about eating disorders. They are life threatening and he is doing nothing more than continuing the stigma. He tried to play it off like it was nothing until I brought up the fact that I know people who are suffering with awful eating disorders. This month is mental health awareness month and I would like to start this month off by saying that mental illnesses are not okay to joke about. They are serious life threatening illnesses. Sure I can take a joke. But not when that joke is about something that takes peoples lives. Educate yourself.
