In the Apostles Creed, in one of the lines it says, I believe in Jesus Christ...he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven. What was happening down there? Did Jesus go to hell (Hades in Gk.)? Does scripture say anything about this? Now this expression, He ascended, what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth? (Ephesians 4:9) For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive in the Spirit. After being made alive, he went and made proclamation to the imprisoned spirits— to those who were disobedient long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah (1 Peter 3:18-20) Why? I have always heard it was to rescue Old Testament good guys or some even see Jesus as going down and reminding the bad guys what they missed out on. But look what happened. For this is why the gospel was preached even to those who are dead, that though judged in the flesh the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does. (1 Peter 4:6) Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades. - Jesus
