In the Information Age we live in, I would like to see the retirement of the term, traditionally, as used in the context of this example: traditionally, John (the Apostle) was killed by boiling in oil. This term is abused as a vague reference to the extra-Biblical at-large. We expect precise scripture references and we should expect the same for the extra-Biblical. Any Preachers or Teachers listening, please take the extra time and work to cite your sources. For example, something as simple as, according to Tertullian in The Prescription Against Heretics (among other various writings), John was boiled in oil. One may count the among other various writings as slack, but at least you give the rest of us something to work with in our own study time. Yes, the Bible is our primary reference, but it is NOT our only one. There are many historical references for the time period of the Bible. Dont use such a broad brush when painting a historical picture! Using the term traditionally does not excuse a poor bibliography. Lets stop using it! Love you all! :)
