In the all things-come-around or be-careful-what-you-wish-for department, it looks like Veep Joe Biden may get his long-forgotten wish on Iraq so many years later. Back when he was a senator in 2006, in an op-ed in the New York Times, he proposed that the U.S., then still occupying the country, divide it like Caesar’s Gaul into three parts – Kurdish, Shiite, and Sunni. In recent days, in a swift advance by al-Qaeda style militants that seems to have sparked a Sunni uprising against an oppressive Shiite government, much of Sunni Iraq is now functionally independent. In the meantime, Kurdish forces have just taken Kirkuk, abandoned by Iraqi army troops, the city they have always wanted for the possible capital of an independent Kurdistan. Meanwhile, in the South and in Baghdad, Shiite militias are coming together to defend Shiite areas and holy sites. It’s a witch’s brew of a Biden plan emerging in plain site.
