In the beginning... Ty Moyer and I had a few conversations about putting a band together. I was playing in a band with Danny Masters, at the time, (Model Citizen). Danny really helped me out of the funk, when Guild of Ages disbanded. I owe him a lot for that. I wanted to start a band of my own and I knew that I wanted Ty on drums. Ty and I always wanted to be in a band together. Ty suggested Jack Cavender as a guitarist. I knew Jack from other projects, but didnt know him that well. Jack suggested we get Mike Orr to play Bass. I knew Mike well from his Riot Act days, so we all agreed to meet and talk about it. We met at Bennigans, on Colorado Blvd, is that place still there??? We had a great meeting. All night long, we told road stories and laughed. I thought the chemistry was good. The lineup just might work. We started telling people about the new band coming out... We had no name, but people who heard about the lineup didnt believe it would last... As a matter of fact, someone who is now a good friend, told me...You dont want to start a band with Jack Cavender! He jumps from band to band. I give it 6 months... Jack and I still laugh about that! 11 years later... We rehearsed and we were ready to go. Mike Bruno gave us our first gig. Iliff Park Saloon. October of 2003. Man, we used to pound Jagermeister! We all got pretty drunk by the end of the night, but we had a blast. The reaction was great. I think immediately we knew we had something good. We set out to be a party band. A band that people could come and see, forget about their daily woes and have a great time. I had no idea it would last as long as it has or make an impact on so many people. We have forged so many friendships with everyone over the past 11 years. We thank you all for making this possible. If a band plays in a club and theres no one around to hear them, do they make a sound??? No! Thats why you all are so, very important to Five 13... Lets celebrate this weekend!
