In the early 70s I worked at a convenience store in Grand Bay. There were 3 of us girls that worked there - too young & nieve to realize how much danger we were in. Most of the time we worked alone (we closed @ eleven every night). The only police presence was what we lovingly called rent-a-cops from the county sheriffs department. They took care of us by making sure somebody was always in the store with us which annoyed our District Manager enough to threaten to fire all of us if the cops were in there the next time he came back. I remember that 2 Delchamps employees were kidnapped & robbed, and Whisenhant had kidnapped & killed employees from 3 other convenience stores in Mobile. We had even made a pact between ourselves that if somebody came in to rob the store they could have anything & everything they wanted but they would have to kill us in the store. We would allow them to take us out of the store. Denise & I had switched shifts one weekend & the first time the rent-a-cops werent in the store, Denise was shot & left for dead. She was paralyzed from the shoulders down all for a few bucks in the cash register. The safe was open, but not one penny was missing. Time has passed & I lost touch with Denise, but I still think about her every time I see a Camero - her car was a 66 camero. I still dont like going in convenience stores. I thank God for my life every day, if not 4 the shift change it wouldve been me.
