In the following quote, Herodotus is writing about the reliability of the Persian messengers. It became the motto for the U.S. service. “It is said that as many days as there are in the whole journey, so many are the men and horses that stand along the road, each horse and man at the interval of a day’s journey; and these are stayed neither by snow nor rain nor heat nor darkness from accomplishing their appointed course with all speed.” I have finished Herodotus’s account of the Greco-Persian wars from 499-449 B.C.E.—all 800 pages of it!—and now I’m on to the Thucydides history of the 27-year war between Sparta and Athens that we now call the Peloponnesian War (431-404 B.C.E.). The early Greeks were certainly a quarrelsome bunch! Have a great Wednesday everyone!
