In the year 1897 exactly one year from the time when the battle of Adwa ended about two thousand Italian prisoners of war were forgiven by Emperor Menelik and were led through along journey to Red Sea to the awaiting ship that will carry them home to Italy. But their freedom didn’t come that easy because of several great men of Menelik’s circle disagreeing with the idea of releasing them that early strongly demanding that they should be held in prison for the rest of their life. Emperor Menelik himself took several days of traveling under heavy rains to Enderta Tegraye where the prison was located. And after his arrival the negotiation to release them took nearly a week, highly educated and wise great men of that era led by Ras Mekonnen have peacefully argued between to release the Italians or to keep them in prison. Finally the decision to let them go was made by a large vote and within minutes all the Italian prisoners were brought before Emperor Menelik and released like a blink of an eye, Scholar Wylde wrote,. Many of them couldn’t resist the unexpected news so simply collapsed on the shoulder of the king and carried away by a flood of tears. The Moment they secured their freedom the freshly freed Italians didn’t want to spare any second, they hold on one another tight, sat on the horseback and strolled down the field to the a long awaited liberty. Even though the dark has fallen and the sun has already sank behind the Enderta hills.
