Incoming PBA chairman condemns racial slurs at Marqus Blakely, wants board to tackle issue Rey Joble, InterAKTV · Monday, October 21, 2013 · 2:49 pm Incoming PBA chairman Mon Segismundo on Monday condemned the racist chants directed at San Mig Coffee import Marqus Blakely during Game Five of the PLDT Telpad Governors’ Cup finals. “I condemn racist remarks,” he told InterAKTV, while promising to tackle the issue in the PBA Board of Governors. “We will discuss in the PBA board appropriate actions in the future.” During the second quarter of Sunday’s game, a group of Petron fants chanted “Monkey! Monkey! Monkey!” at Blakely while the tournament’s Best Import was taking a free throw. The head of one fan club has already apologized for the incident, which San Mig Coffee coach Tim Cone called “discouraging.” PBA action to combat racism would be in line with moves by international organizations to tackle the issue in the sporting realm. Last May, football’s governing body FIFA created a task force whose mission is to stamp out racist behavior during matches, with the authority to sanction clubs and football associations found guilty. League commissioner Chito Salud, for his part, warned that the PBA would not hesitate to take action against “unruly fans.” “Basic security must be enforced. Unruly fans should be escorted out of the venue without delay,” Salud said, while also appealing to PBA clubs to help. “Teams and players also play a role. I expect them to strongly appeal to their fans. Any provocation and instigation by teams and players of fan negative conduct will be dealt with accordingly. “This is their league and livelihood and hence should be the first to protect it. finally, I will initiate a blacklisting of recalcitrant fans. They will be banned from attending the league events.” - admin yeti ^_^
