Increase the Minimum wage…….Lets think about that. First thing is that no matter what, companies like Walmart, and McDonalds are not going to just say, “oh well, I guess I’ll have to cover this wage increase by cutting into my profits”. They are going to pass the increase on to the consumer. Or, expect more work out of fewer employees. I also cannot see the Mom and Pop place with a few employees taking a hit in their own earnings either. They will either increase prices or reduce the number of employees to cover their increased cost. And in some cases just close their doors. In all fairness there may be the odd small employer that will just suck it up. But even in these cases, if they could afford to pay you more after the feds increase minimum wage….why werent they paying you more before? While the minimum wage increase makes your check a little bigger does it really make your check stretch any further? Having lived through a few of these forced increases as a minimum wage earner I say, maybe for a few months. But as soon as consumer prices equalize after the new law takes effect I found myself in the same situation as before the increase. More days left between pay checks than money. A forced minimum wage increase is nothing but a lateral move for those earning the minimum wage. In fact it could be even worse by reducing or eliminating any state or federal aid a family might be receiving. A minimum wage increase would have to include an increase in the maximum amount earned that is allowed for food stamps, WIC, SSI, etc. otherwise some are going to loose it. As for those that earn greater than minimum wage it is a reduction in pay. Consumer prices go up but the wage earned remains the same. Now their check doesnt go as far as before. A minimum wage increase is like eating at a Chinese Buffet. When you get it you feel all warm and full. But in an hour or so, you’re hungry again.
