Incredible wooden idol, which originally stood 5.3 metres in height and was found in a peat bog at Kirovgrad, Sverdlovsk region, in the Ural Mountains of eastern Russia, is about to reveal its secrets, according to a new report. The anthropomorphic or human-like pole, complete with hook-nosed face, extended chin and oval-shaped head, is thought to be about 9,500 years old and dates to the so-called Mesolithic age. It is covered in sequences of parallel and zigzagging lines, complete with secondary abstract faces, all of which are said to contain secret encrypted codes. Apparently, this code relates to the creation of the world with a message for the future. Only part of the idol remains today (2.8 metres to be more precise), the rest having been lost during political turmoil and upheaval in Russia over the past 100 years. The Shigir Idol, as it is known, is said here to be the olden wooden statue in the world, but this is clearly not so. There are smaller wooden, pole-like statues that date to the Upper Palaeolithic age, which were carved by the reindeer hunters of Northern Europe at the end of the last Ice Age. As for the idols message for the future, I suspect this is all just spin to gain sponsors for further work on the examination of this extraordinary piece of Mesolithic art, which could well turn out to be older than the currently believed estimate of 9,500 years. The Shigir Idol reminds me a little of the Göbekli Tepe T-shaped pillars, some of which are a similar height in size. In my book Göbekli Tepe: Genesis of the Gods I propose that it was sophisticated incoming Swiderian groups from Russia who entered eastern Anatolia via the Caucasus some 12,000 years ago and became the elite behind the construction of this extraordinary megalithic complex. I am convinced the Göbekli builders came from the north, and were part of a more archaic tradition known as the eastern Gravettian.
