Independence Day update: I want to share with you guys some news about my next book, Independence Day. On the surface its going to seem like bad news but in fact I think youll find its actually good news. So originally, I.D. was supposed to come out this June, 2013. Its now being pushed back to next May, 2014. Seems pretty bad, right? I know many of you will be disappointed. But please dont be - The reason were pushing it back is because, at some point during the writing and re-writing, my publisher and I started to realize that I might be in the process of writing something thats not just a good book but might in fact be a really really good book, maybe even a classic that people are talking about for a long time to come. The plot just started to open up and become something more complex, more authentic, more intense, with the kind of sustained intrigue, action, and depth that really good novels achieve. A book that, hopefully, is not only an awesome next chapter in the Dewey Andreas series, but might even make you stand up and yell, holy crap!!! after you finish it. Im not sure that makes any sense, and I know a lot of you will be disappointed Dewey wont be hanging out with you on the beach this summer. I mean, Im bummed too in a way. Its fun to have a new book come out and see the reactions from people. But I want to give my readers something that isnt just a good book - I want to write at least one classic that people are talking about for a long time to come. We couldve put out a book this summer that probably wouldve done very well. My guess is most publishers wouldve done just that. My publisher is different and its why I love them. They wanted what I want, to try and create a classic that stands the test of time. For them and for me, its not about the number of books sold or how much money a book makes, though that stuff matters of course. Its about the writing and the goal of creating a great novel. I dont know if it will be great - you guys will be the judge of that - but I do know that I want to give it a try. In the meantime, I am still going to try and put something out there this summer, like The Third Door - i.e., a shorter piece involving Dewey. I will of course keep you posted on that.
