India, Russia to expand civil nuclear cooperation India and Russia are to strengthen coooperation in civil nuclear energy and reach commercial agreements for the third and fourth reactors of Kudankulam atomic power plant in Tamilnadu. External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said in Moscow that the first reactor of Kudankulam plant will start producing electricity soon and go up to the level of genrating 1000 megawatts of power. The second unit will go critical in the next six months or so. Talking to the Voice of Russia he said the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited is setting up two 1,000 MW reactors at Kudankulam in Tamil Nadu with Russian help. Salman Khurshid was in Moscow to co-chair the Indo-Russian Inter-Governmental Commission on economic, scientific and cultural cooperation ahead of the annual bilateral summit in Moscow later this month. In reply to a question, he said the North-South corridor is essential for promotion of trade. The minister also praised Russia for showing interest in the ambitious TAPI pipe line project starting from Turkmenistan and going all the way via Afghanistan and Pakistan to India. He said on completion, it will change the landscape of the entire region.
