Interesting article. That is a problem with the western states, where they are so large. Utah, for example, has approximately close to almost 2/3s of its population centered along a 120 long by 5 to 25 mile deep area of land. So, just to round it out, about close to 2.2 million people in a 1200 sg mile zone. The state itself is 84,889 sg miles in size, so essentially, that means that the remaining 600k+ people spread throughout the state get very little to say about the political climate (not that it matters, given it is the LDS church that is the real power in the state anyway). When the state voted on whether to host the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, only the three heavily populated counties in the state voted in favor of it, the rest of the state did not. The general consensus generally has always been that why should the rural areas fork over tax money that will benefit the Wealthier parts of the state? Reading the article paints such a very valid point for the citizens in Northern Colorado. I did love the editorial piece at the end from The Greeley Tribune. There exists no such thing as "constructive dialogue" in politics. It is in essence the party with the power using threats to get what it wants, in this case, compliance. This is a strong example of why government fails to work. It is not there to represent people, it is there to represent its own vested interests, as the article itself points out. “While we understand and agree with the message commissioners are trying to send to Denver — rural counties feel disenfranchised — we think Weld residents would be better served if commissioners drop the 51st state idea and focus on engaging the state’s political leaders in a constructive dialogue that addresses their issues,” the editorial said.
