Interesting factoid to share: While cleaning up my hard drive, I came across some notes Id taken on 17th c. clothing at the V&A. Complete with thread diameters (got bless micro-sensitive calipers!) Most of the sewing/construction thread was .4 to .5 mm in diameter--this includes thread used to sew outer pieces together, thread to sew lining to outer fabric, thread for pick-stitching bindings and edgings, etc. Keep in mind these were wool & silk garments made of substantial cloth, not fine linen shirts & smocks. The various threads used for buttonholes, lacing holes and for stitching hooks on and buttons were .8 to 1.2 mm in size. So today, out of curiosity I tried measuring the diameter of my various threads, and discovered that heavy duty upholstery thread and/ or smallish buttonhole twist is actually a lot closer the size of the original construction threads than standard modern sewing thread. Im keeping that in mind next time I made a doublet...
