Interesting project, I really hope this gets done, its been talked about for years... More than 100 years ago, the Spree canal in the historical centre of Berlin lost its original function. We want to reanimate this side-canal of the river Spree, between Schlossplatz and Bode-Museum, one of Berlin’s biggest underused brownfield areas in the heart of the city. We want this part of the river to be turned into a natural swimming pool (Flussbad). Once this plan is realized, Berlin will have the biggest and most exciting pool in the world. The project consits of three important sectors: 1. Swimming pool Between the proposed Humboldt-Forum and the tip of the Museum Island at Bode-Museum will be a 750 meter long natural pool. To access the water some parts of the canal walls have to be replaced by open staircases. Changing rooms will be placed into the basement of the historic Emperors Monument in front of the castle. 2. Water Treatment The river water needs to be cleaned. This task is done by a natural reed-bed filter in a 300 m stretch between Gertraudenbrücke (Leipziger Straße) and Schleusenbrücke (Floodgate Bridge) at the Department of Foreign Affairs. From there the treated water runs into the pool, which surface level is around 1.4 meters below. 3. ‘Old river bed’ Upstream we transform the canal into a natural river habitat. As a biotope it creates shelter to endangered animals and plants. And it also becomes a piece of the Spree river ecological functionality within the city. Simultaneously a new urban park is build next to the artificially designed “old river bed”.
