Interesting study. Effect of Squat Depth and Barbell Load on Relative Muscular Effort in Squatting, by Bryanton, Kennedy, Carey and Chiu, in Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research What they conclude: Knee extensors can be strengthened most effectively by deep squats and can be performed with lighter loads. Hip extensors and ankle plantar-flexors can be trained using heavier loads with smaller ranges of motion, as these muscle groups are less sensitive to depth. So if you cannot do an unloaded deep squat despite practice and coaching, maybe its because the quads are inhibited. Perhaps you lean forward to cheat. Or your ankles lock up because your quads are inhibited, putting the brakes on movement so you dont get hurt. Just a thought. At least thats one possibility of movement patterning dysfunction I will rule out.
