Introduction to Poetry: This poem talks about the complexities of a poem. The poem brings up the imagery of a labyrinth as the poet compares a poem to a labyrinth by the phrase “probe his way out”. The word “probe” suggests that a certain degree of curiosity and exploration is required to find the actual meaning of a poem. Like being in a maze, one has to explore one’s surroundings in order to find one’s way out. Furthermore, “his way out” also connotes finding one’s way out of a maze, and in the context of this poem, implies that when readers first read a poem, they will not immediately understand the poem, and will be lost to the meaning of the poem, but if they have the patience and ability to “probe”, they will ultimately understand the poem’s message. Like a complex maze, a poem’s true message requires a lot of patience and desire to explore to find. The poet wants to remind readers that finding the meanings of poems is not an easy task, and cannot be quickly done. Instead, readers have to appreciate and read in between the lines of poems in order to truly understand it.
