Investigations 101 Ok, this post is basically to those who are new to paranormal investigations, not doing them, but having one done. The point of this is to just give you, the client a little insight into the process. The first thing is contamination of the site. By this we mean audio or noise and visual. This happens when there are too many variables to control. The best scenario is that you, the client are off site. The worst is that you, your partner/spouse, your friends and your children are all there during the investigation. This creates way too many variables and any evidence gathered cant really be verified as genuine because of the great chance of contamination. If you really believe your site has paranormal activity and want it investigated, you really need to eliminate as many variables as possible. Having you and your partner there during an investigation is really the max amount of additional people that can be there. I know its exciting, but if you really want to have others be excited, then show them what was found. Like I said, if there are too many variables, not only does it become less likely to find evidence, but anything found is nearly impossible to say, yep that was an EVP, more like well there is an EVP, but where was Timmy? The second thing you the client need to be aware of is time. The investigations take several hours or longer. First baseline sweeps have to be done. This means taking EMF reading throughout the site to account for normal EMF spikes. Then equipment has to be set up in hot spots you the client inform us of. This is also the time you take us on a walk-through to inform us of what happened where and to whom. Once all that is done, we need to wait for it to get dark, now ideally that coincides with set up. We go lights out and start. We take each spot one at a time, 2 if there is no chance of contaminating each others investigations, and investigate. This is done electronically, measuring EMF/Temperature, ground vibrations, visually using cameras, laser grids and audio for EVPs. Now depending on how large the site is, really dictates how long it takes. But a good thorough investigation ideally goes to each spot 2-3 times. So from start to finish it can last 3+ hours. If this is a 3 bedroom house with a basement it can be 2-3 AM before things wrap. You have to remember that getting this evidence takes time. If you want someone to just come in for an hour and leave, having someone come to your site is not a realistic option. The final bit of info is that, if this site is your home, and things happen, you have to take into account the number of hours you spend in your home. We, the investigators, come in for a fraction of the time you spend there, and these entities dont come on queue, if they did there would be no need to have something investigated, youd already know. So keep in mind that even if our investigation turns up nothing, doesnt mean youre hearing or seeing things, those things just didnt make themselves present to us. These entities require energy, or so is the theory, and if they cant get the energy they need, maybe they cant manifest. We really know nothing about what they are. We speculate they are spirits or worse demonic, but no one really knows. So there is no way to know if they can pull energy from electrical sources, or they need a persons fear or anger, maybe they can only manifest every other Wednesday? We dont know, so cant make them appear. This means you have to be patient, really quiet and still, wait and then wait some more. So in closing, have as little people there as possible, especially children, be aware that an investigation takes hours and be mindful that evidence or lack there of, means your house is or isnt haunted. Hopefully this gives you some insight into what goes into an investigation and why those 3 things are really important.
