Iran unveils a monument for fallen Jewish soldiers. Iran this week unveiled a monument in remembrance of Jewish soldiers killed when Iraq attacked Iran. The war which lasted from 1980 to 1988 caused Iran suffered millions of casualties and billions in damage. Some of those casualties were Jewish. The Jewish community leaders and several of Iranian religious officials took part in a ceremony on Monday. Photographs were published on Iranian news agency websites of IRNA. Its website showed banners featuring images of the fallen Jewish troops or martyrs and wreaths placed alongside the monument, which includes a Hebrew inscription reading Peace forever. Other images show religious figures laying wreaths at the soldiers graves and attendees of the ceremony praying together. The vice speaker of Irans parliament attended the ceremony, where he praised the Jewish community for supporting the government. The explicit stances of the Jewish community in supporting the Islamic Republic’s establishment and their respect to the Supreme Leader of the Revolution demonstrate the bonds originating from the teachings of the divine religions,” Mohammad Hassan Aboutorabi-Fard said on Monday, according to Tasnim news agency. He also praised the Jewish community for denouncing U.S. demands on Iran and the violent and inhumane behavior of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Iran, a country who has given shelter to Jews for more than 3,000 years, has the Middle East’s largest Jewish population outside of Israel. Under former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Iran further opened opened up the door for more understanding and communication with Jewish leaders, he met with many from the faith. His kind gestures and outreach towards and for the Jewish communities werer downplayed during his time. Many Jewish Zionist claimed-for purposes of negative propaganda-that he did not respect the Jewish communities. This was later shown to be an outright lie when various images and videos surfaced of him engaging in several meetings with Jewish leaders and scholars. President Rouhani carries on this tradition in meeting and congregating with the Jewish communities today.
