Irony…I have a story about irony to share. Near the end of the day my electrician said to me John, there is a retired Drill Instructor in room ??? Well, you me; without delay I went to his room and announced my desire to enter. Introduced myself and said I heard he too is a retired Marine who served as a DI. He affirmed as such, I pulled up a chair and we talked for a while. Hes 77, joined in 1952 and retired in 1974 a GYSGT. Shot through the ankle in the Korean war, suffering from cancer and heart disease caused by Agent Orange but very happy, not bitter. Now about that irony part, he said he was a DI at Marine OCS up in Quantico. Had a blast and did three short tours there between Vietnam tours. I remarked that the hardest thing for me to do is not use profanity when talking about military stories in a christian hospital. He replied I never swore, used profanity not once in my life. I am 77 years old. About 3 minutes later he told me he got busted two stripes which is why he retired a GYSGT. I asked what he did to get busted. Apparently a dumb officer candidate couldnt keep his thumb up along the hand on the movement Dress Right Dress and after losing all patience with the young lad he charged through the ranks, grabbed his hand and tried to bite his thumb off. Got busted from SSGT to CPL. Irony, too pure hearted to use profanity but more than happy to bite your thumb off.
