Is #petrescue transport an effective response to the #petrescue - TopicsExpress

Is #petrescue transport an effective response to the #petrescue situation? Discuss? Mahattans animal shelter regularly posts animals are being euthanized and in need of #petrescue, and given that NYC has more philanthropic charitable capability than practically any city in the US besides San Fransisco or Los Angeles. The average Northern state has 100,000 animals euthanized every year. Southern states have higher numbers, but 100,000 is still a huge number. A #petrescue forming near Baltimore contacted SEPRR for help promoting their fundraising to get started. Their stated mission was to transport pets from Southern States. Running a search on petfinder, we discovered that there are 11,000 animals in need of adoption in the Atlanta market (50 mile radius). We found over 22,000 within 50 miles of Baltimore. So, does transporting pets from the Atlanta area to Baltimore make any sense whatsoever? This is an important thing to remember.. when transporting, always run a search on the pets already available in the market where you may be sending the pet via transport. 9 out of 10 times, when I have looked, there is already a pet just like the one being transported, markings, age, gender and breed, within 50 miles of the destination address. So, transporting would displace that pet from ever finding home. Bryan Grant, SEPRR Things to think about and thoughtfully discuss.
