Is there any way we can be done with the basic white girl thing now? Every time fall rolls around it seems like we just have to jump on the train and ride it straight to hell, no matter what. Buzzfeed lists X Things Every Basic White Girl Does in Fall, media outlets make winking jokes to show everyone that they get the joke too, and pumpkin spice replaces bacon as one of the stupidest no-assembly-required punchlines on the Internet. And it was sort of funny a few years ago, back when the stereotype was fresh, but its become completely stale and irrelevant since then. It wouldnt be so annoying if it werent for the fact that it actually affects behavior. Because no one wants to be basic, right? No white girl wants to be called a white girl. So they feel a little bad, a little guilty, a little less unique and more self-loathing, if they catch themselves wearing Ugg boots while walking through a pile of leaves. So they take a picture and Instagram it and make jokes about it on Facebook and Twitter so they can self-identify, so they can ironically confess to their basicness themselves before someone calls them out on it. Thats such a stupid mindset. Drinking Starbucks, taking pumpkin patch selfies, wearing Ugg boots and Northface jackets, loving October, etc., are just THINGS. Do them if you want. Or dont. Who cares? You cant extrapolate a whole lot of someones personality from their choice in autumnal footwear. A young Caucasian female feeling embarrassed for drinking pumpkin spice Starbucks in October is like me apologizing for wearing black-rimmed glasses because theyre hipster (which is another trend we all should have put to bed by now). At best, making jokes about white girls is a cheap shortcut to proving youre aware of pop culture. But its been a very dead horse for a while now, so lets stop beating it.
