Is this a hypothetical tale? Is this just a story to elicit sympathy or compassion from unknown travelers and peers…friends? Or, is it love? Is it true Love? Here’s the story. You weigh in, what you think. Is this a story of enduring love or a ruse, meant to deceive those to whom the story is told? In the early 80’s a movie was filmed in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico; Isla de Cozumel, Chechen Itza, Tulum, Isla Mujeres and other locations local to the area. Against All Odds staring Jeff Bridges, Rachel Ward, James Woods, Alex Karras, Richard Widmark was essentially a love story filmed in romantic locations which at the time were unfamiliar to middle class America. Several years earlier Jacques Cousteau had begun to popularize the location due to the outstanding diving along the Mexican peninsula on his TV show The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau. This story begins with “girl” and “boy”. The girl is about 26-27 years old, boy…maybe 32-33. They’re young, married just a few years, second for both. They’re full of hormones and hope, somewhat naive to the world, middle class, white folk, Northwest suburbia kind of people. While watching the movie Against All Odds they view a love scene filmed at the bungalow on the beach. There’s beautiful scenery, underwater action, palm trees waving in the wind, hormones running wild and as they’re watching the “girl” turns to the “boy” and says….“Take me there”. THE CONNECTION TO THAT PARTICULAR GEOGRAPHIC SPOT IS MADE! This could be a side story but, it may play a significant role in this narrative. When “girl” is about 36 she comments to “boy”, “We should renew our wedding vows for our tenth wedding anniversary”. “Boy” isn’t enamored with the idea and “girl” makes a special note. It’s a “secret note” known to her only. Life goes on for girl and boy and time passes. One day 20 or so years after they marry they’ve earned enough to consider it’s time to start traveling, something both have longed for from many years previous. One day in a travel agency they spot a brochure on the wall with a picture of Tulum, MX. It was the exact place filmed in the movie, Against All Odds, filmed now some 17-18 years earlier. The thought of “Take me there” was in both their minds as they weighed where they wanted to travel to. Tickets for 15 days were bought. Cozumel here we come. After much exploration and 14 days the bungalow on the beach where Rachel and Jeff, (Jessie and Terry), was found. Now destroyed by hurricane Mitch in 1995 photographs of the remains authenticated the “take me there” beach. Palancar Beach was the location of the photo shoot at the bungalow. The palm trees had been re-planted. The roof of the bungalow was gone but the rock façade was recognizable. We had actually found the exact spot. Fast forward…..”Girl” and “Boy” are now married nearly 25 years. “Boy” decides he is going to make her 25th wedding anniversary memorable. He makes arrangements to book a trip (now their third) to Cozumel Mexico. “Boy” calls a wedding planner on the Island and makes arrangements to renew their wedding vows at the “Take Me There Beach”. He invites “girl” to a popular local steak house for a special dinner a couple months previous to the planned trip. He, earlier in the day, delivers 25 yellow roses and a diamond ring to the restaurant the morning of their reservation with instructions to deliver the flowers and the ring during the desert course at dinner. Upon deliverance of the flowers and ring “Girl” appears and acts speechless, “Blown Away” when desert is served. It is January 11… her birthday… all she can say is, “It’s my birthday! What is this”? “Boy” begins to tear up as he reads her the letter accompanying the flowers and the ring. The letter essentially chronicles her desire to renew wedding vows and his enduring love for her. It will happen at your “Take Me There” beach in a couple months. Our best friends will accompany us as matron of honor and best man. We will spend our 25th anniversary in our favorite spot….our “take me there” spot. Now, the question! This event took place 9 years ago. The question for those who read it is this “Is this real”? “Is it an act of love from boy to girl or is it “Too little too late”? She had suggested renewing the wedding vows at 10 years after all. Is it just, ”Show” for the boy… “Look at how much he did for her” so that he had bragging rights? Weigh in! I would like to hear from you. What do you think of this story…or is it just a story?
