It could have happened this way….. Late December, 1884. It’s cold – but it’s a clear winter, star sprinkled night in North Central Texas. A man and a woman, in an old wagon pulled by two broken down horses, were nearing the small community of Selden Texas, the place of their birth when Mary, who was expecting their first child, spoke, “Joseph, I’m so tired, can we find a place to rest?” Joseph spied a farmhouse. Welcoming lanterns were beaming in the windows. Smoke was billowing from the fireplace, surely the house was warm. Joseph walked up. Knocking on the door, he was fearful that he might be turned away. A man opened the door. “Hello stranger, kin I help ya?” “My name is Joseph an’ that’s my wife Mary. We is expectin’ a baby soon. She is cold an’ we need a place to rest. Have ya got a place fer us?” The man tells Joseph, “We got a passel of kids ourselves, an’ no room here in the house, but I got a little room back there in the barn. It’s warm, got a wood stove in it. But I gotta ask ya, where did you git that camel?” Joseph just smiled and shook the man’s hand, “We’d be much obliged.” *** Three cowboys, huddled around a campfire, somewhere out west. Zack, about fifty years old, was stirring a pot of something the cowboys declared was stew. It was their supper. “I hope you boys like this, it’s all we got,” Zack kept on stirring. “Nothin’ like a good home cooked meal,” John chuckled. “We kin wash it down with the coffee,” Sam added. Soon, the stew was hot – the three cowboys divided the meal out into their tin plates and began eating. Suddenly, it happened – a beautiful, Heavenly chorus of Angels – singing praises to the new born Savior. The three cowboys were scared, terribly afraid -- nothing like this had happened to them before. Low and behold, An Angel appeared in front of them. “Don’t be afraid, we are sharing the good news. Today, in the small town of Selden, a baby was born. HE is the promised, blessed Savior. His name is JESUS! King of Kings!” Another Angel, “That is HIS star in the East.” And just as suddenly as they had appeared, the Angels were gone, sharing the good news with the world. Zack regained his composure, “Let’s go see that baby! That is some bright star!” Sam asked, “What can we take ‘im? We shore need to brang ‘im a present!” “We kin take ‘im some beef jerky, so he’ll have somethin’ to eat when he gets older,” Zack told them. “I kin give ‘im a quilt to help him keep warm on the cold Texas nights.” John held up a quilt that his mother had made for him. “First thang tomorrow, we’ll git these cows to Abilene, and then we’ll strike out to find that baby those Angels told us about.” This is the season to remember the birth of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior – a gift from our God. All of the Martin Family, Carroll, Melinda, Micah-Dane, Xavier, Michaela, Edward, Ashley and Ava wish you a very Merry Christmas.
