It has been 45 years since independence. I have never been interested in politics. After the war ended, I went back to complete my studies and after that got a job with a multinational company. Also, coming back from the war found my mother and brother butchered by the Pakistani Army and the house looted of everything—only an empty shell remained. During the war I saw many deaths of innocent people, friends, and foes. In the background of all these atrocities my personal loss seemed irrelevant, almost an inevitable issue. Like many of my comrades, a necessary sacrifice for the independence of the country. During the war I was in a remote corner of Bangladesh and my experiences were limited to the local events. The wide canvas of 1971 was a blurred vision to me. However, gradually bits and pieces of information started to permeate and coalesce, and a concrete picture gradually started to emerge. The most disturbing part is that I am now having a feeling that whatever I knew as fact is actually nothing by myths. Was it really necessary for my mother and eldest brother and other countless people to die in 1971 or was it due to not only a massive failure of leadership but also a betrayal of the peoples trust. Some of the recently published books, particularly by AVM A.K. Khandaker and the daughter of the war time prime minister of Bangladesh Mr. Tajuddin Ahmed have raised a number of questions. Many bits and pieces of the puzzle are falling into place revealing a narrative that casts grave doubts on the prevailing myth. It’s probably too early to write a conclusive history of the emergence of Bangladesh. Maybe our grand children will have a much clearer and non-partisan picture. Today I saw this video, most likely commissioned by the BNP. Nevertheless, it appears to be well researched and contains many nuggets that cannot be dismissed out rightly.
