It has occurred to me that the wild horses could be valuable in helping to clean up North American radioactive contamination. They would be much happier free and if they are set free on contaminated land, they will take up radionuclides and much of this contamination will be concentrated in their bones. Some will be excreted in feces. By setting them free, having volunteer crews follow the herds to collect the manure and skeletal remains upon the natural death of a horse, much contamination could be removed from the environment. As has been seen at Chernobyl, skeletons of grazers are highly radioactive. The horses are eating contaminated hay and alfalfa now, AND what is RALLY interesting is that our wild horses have been eating it since nuclear testing began many decades ago. The horses will be better acclimated to the task, genetically speaking. The skeletons can be stored with other radioactive waste or fences and skeletons can be solvated, suspended in aquatic solution to filter and remove radioactive isotopes, reducing storage required. We have to remove the radionuclides from the environment and wild horses certainly are NOT food for humans or domestic animals. Fukushima is a game changer! We have to rethink EVERYTHING we do now!
