It has taken me three days to write down these words about my last trip to visit Ron Dias in the Community Hosp. of Monterey Peninsula. For those who don’t know about Ron Dias please go to his web site … RonDias … & read about the life of a great artist & a dear, dear man, who has labored for scores of years in the world of animation. He started at Disney’s when he was in his late teens. Go on …. Ron Dias … I know you will love reading about him & viewing his art work. Back to my story … When I arrived at the beautiful hospital … thanks to Janice Barker driving me the last few miles (Janice is always there as Ron’s staunch friend … what a helpful and caring person she is) … we made our way to room 5006 which has a view of a beautiful park with a three-story waterfall!! I was so grateful to see Ron recognize I was there (when his medications let him)… However, it was pretty much a one sided conversation with Ron “responding” with his eyes & his eyebrows while I fooled with his silver & white hair, stroked his face and fiddled with his ear. I reminded him of many fun times we’ve shared … (I didn’t cry once … that came later). There was a big moment for him when Janice connected with Ron’s son on SKYPE. Ron tried to touch his face by touching the screen. Dear Howard Blair then entered wearing a brave smile for Ron’s benefit. He’d returned to stay with Ron thru the night. A lovely nurse, Allison & later Dharma, the pharmacist were in & out checking that Ron was physically comfortable. They both told Janice & me that Ron had been a wonderful upbeat patient & would keep the staff laughing with his story-telling. After about two and half hours I left without actually saying the words “good-bye”. I just couldn’t … you understand. Drove home Monday. Checked in with Janice was thrilled to learn that Ron’s son was able to fly out from the east coast in time to be with his dad … until the end. I told Howard … Ron and he have been companions for decades … that he had some good news & some bad news about Ron. The bad news? After all these years, Howard had to give Ron back … The good news? He gave him back to Someone who has loved Ron since before he was born & Who will continue to love him thru the eons. Well, I never meant to write so much … I guess it was more important to me than I realized. I will sign off with the blessing that Ron always said to me… “Goodbye … I’m sending you a bunch of kisses for both your cheeks.”
