It is World Elephant Day today. Why does a lion project care about - TopicsExpress

It is World Elephant Day today. Why does a lion project care about elephants? Because we care about this Niassa wilderness and all wildlife and they are a critical part of this; because we live amongst them and it is part of our responsibility to speak up and do something, because they bring us joy, and because they are dying all around us. You have seen this video before -youtube/watch?v=poCHkGZOKNo but worth showing again today. This is Half Ear, we knew him for eight years as he came to visit us in our camp. He was a friend. The gate is still there, but empty now as the elephant has gone. In 2010 he was poached for his ivory on an island next to our camp. One of the first elephants to die in this wave of poaching that hit Niassa. We care about all the elephants that have died - but sometimes it is the named ones that tell the story. I am scared that one day this may be all that we have left.
