It is a new year, and so far I have talked with four derby leagues and a few businesses about photo usage, so I thought Id just post this publicly in hopes it can help with matters: Some simple rules for photo usage: 1. Always find out whose photograph it is. 2. Make sure you have asked the photographer to use the photo for whatever way you need to use it (flyer, on your website, instagram, flickr, tumblr, facebook, wherever). 3. Dont assume. Dont think you already have permission. Dont guess. Dont think you dont have enough time. Ask. Wait for a response. Get permission. Or dont use it. 4. Derby leagues set aside funds for practice time, for merchandise, for marketing, and more. Have funds set aside for photos. If you paid a photographer $25 per photo, and used one photo per game for 6 home games, your entire budget for photos would be $150 for an entire year. (If you have 30 people in your league total, you would only need each skater to pay $5 per year to publicize your games.) 5. Again, please, always ask. Even if the photographer comes back at you with a no, he or she will be feel treated with respect and may come back with a yes next time around. 6. And for myself and my photographer friends: know that there is turnover in every derby league every single year, with new people taking up roles they never have before, and sometimes habits or names or things get lost along the way, so always have patience, especially at the beginning of each season if there is a flub along the way. Thank you, all!
