It is not easy to accept the truth of the spirit. But clinging to - TopicsExpress

It is not easy to accept the truth of the spirit. But clinging to the truth of the spirit is the essence of our faith. We know that we are not flesh for it is not flesh that defines who we truly are. We call what we truly are as our essence. The essence of something is what makes it truly what it is. For instance, we can say that the body or flesh is not who we truly are. We can exist even without the body or flesh. This is something we have not experienced so people doubt it. We need to experience its independent existence to know it. Before we can experience that reality however, we must depend on faith and reason. Reason makes us seek the ultimate cause of our existence because it answers the question of who we are and what we are. Faith makes us cling to what is to the truth or reality of this ultimate cause. Faith makes us for instance think of ourselves as spirit. We cannot think of ourselves as flesh and find any rational justification for our life. Nature is rational. It is therefore to our advantage to choose to think that life is rational. It is irrational to think that there is an end to life for life that has an end is absolutely meaningless. Reason militates against such meaningless existence and in the process creates bitterness or defeat. We can choose to be bitter or passive defeat. But we can choose to find meaning in life. And this is the wiser choice. To think that we are spirit and not flesh is thus a rational choice. The next step is to know the nature of the spirit. Spirit is fundamental and indestructible. It is the opposite of flesh that is superficial and perishable. Flesh cannot remain with us forever because it becomes a burden to our consciousness. There is more versatility to consciousness than being in flesh. We arrive at this knowledge through reason helped along by revelation. Faith and reason combine to guide us in our journey through life. Reason enables us to see. Faith keeps us alive.
