It is very important for American parents and students to understand the affect international university applicants have on our university system. As more and more students can afford it and opt to come here, they take up slots otherwise available to American students. This year alone anywhere from 30,000 to 180,000 Chinese students opted out of their SAT equivalent (much more rigorous test), and an estimated 1/5 say they will apply abroad. As Americans focus on everything outside of academics, American students will fall further down the ladder during the admissions process. Foreign students pay full price, have an incredible work ethic, and attend to obtain a degree, not throw a party. Why do Chinese students avoid the gaokao? Because the test is mind-blowingly difficult...9 hours over multiple days...16 to 17 hours of study for the year leading up to it.
