It is with incomprehensible sadness that I announce the passing of my father, John Paul Munsie, 12 weeks after being diagnosed with lung cancer. He transitioned into light a few minutes after 2 pm, surrounded by the radiating love of my mother, my two sisters, myself and my brother, his youngest brother Michael and long time friend Jamesie Bower, to the sound of raindrops on the window and the leaves. I always saw my dad as Clint Eastwood, Charles Bronson and John Wayne all rolled into one man, he lived up to this proud image until his last breath. He faced his disease with awe inspiring courage and his usual stubbornness, smiling at me through the pain until his body would no longer allow him to. I wish for us all to be so brave when it comes time for us to shed these vessels. Dad, I remember when you and mom took me in and gave Allan and I a home, a family and a life, I remember you teaching me how to swim off the dock on the lake in Calgary. I remember you tickling me with the Claw until I almost blacked out from laughing. I remember you carrying me up the stairs when I had the chickenpox on Christmas day when I was 7 years old because I was too weak to move. I remember the countless hours you coached my soccer and baseball teams for so many years. I remember and will keep alive the morals, values and lessons you lived by and instilled in me and pass them on if I ever get to be a father. If I do get to be a father, you are welcome to come back in the form of my child so I can take care of you. Thank you for choosing to be my Dad, by both action and default you were and always will be my hero. You inspire me to be as selfless a man as you were and live a life full of goodness. I will always try to be a man you would be proud of. I know no words to express how grateful and proud I am to be your son. I love you Dad. I will miss you, you will not be forgotten…I remember Dad…I remember everything. -John Paul Munsie. March 23, 1944 - September 23, 2014
