It looks like Yanukovychs government is showing cracks under the weight of the protests and may be on its way out. This article is fairly succinct in summing up the situation there. I would point out, however, that the author here seems to assume that Ukraine has historically always been an entity similar to what it currently is. Actually, large swaths of the country for centuries lived quite different lives from other swaths of the current country. One of the problems in having been ruled by foreign powers for as long as it was is that even the final borders of Ukraine were actually dictated to it by foreign powers. The Soviets in particular purposefully cobbled together a land that was strong in terms of its geopolitical and economic potential. However, it was also strongly multicultural and thus would have difficulty uniting against Moscow - or for any other reason. This is the case in the current Ukrainian conflict - but also in other conflicts in and between various post-Soviet states: Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Azerbaijan in particular have also felt the repercussions of the borders given them by Moscow. Ill post another couple of resources below to offer a view of the divisions Ukraine faces. No matter what happens there in the current situation, Ukraine will have a very long road ahead in trying to build a government where everyone feels democratically represented and welcomed in Ukrainian society. All of our best wishes go out to the people of Ukraine.
