It must be a balance in everything we do, not too much of everything, keep it simple, not complicated. ~Abdullah Ahmad Badawi Day 5 Yoga for Athletes Happy Friday. The week is flying by. Heading out for a #bike ride later, and I thought this balance pose was great for getting focused. Being on two feet is much different than being on two very thin wheels. #Vriksasana means tree pose. The tree is an important symbol in Hindu mythology. It is stable and strong and is connected to the Earth; therefore it is associated with inner growth and self-realization. There are a couple of modifications for this pose so do what is best for you. Start by rooting the four corners of your foot into the earth for stability. Use your toes as a root to a tree. Engage the standing leg and glutes. Depending on your flexibility and balance, press your other foot to your ankle, your calf or your inner thigh. Never to your Knee! As you do this, your hip will externally rotate to open. Level your pelvis. Use the inner energy of the midline to help you to become stable. Draw the shoulders back and down and open the chest. Bring your hands to heart center. Lengthen through the crown of the head and gaze toward the horizon. Continue to use your toes, feet, ankles and upper thigh for support as you build balance within. Play around with inner balance and bring your arms overhead like branches in the wind. Vriksasana is a great pose for building strength in the legs and glutes, as well as the little muscles in the foot and ankle, so its also great pose to use in your #run training. Until tomorrow.
