It right royally pisses me off when people remove a post or comment because I criticise them (the expressed intellectual content) and they (the person) know I am right. The whole useful point in conversation is to evolve and refine the shared ideas. None of us are entirely right and it is useful to discuss how we perhaps misunderstand or misrepresent the world. If someone points out that my thoughts, ideas, rationale or expression is faulty and I disagree I discuss it. If I realise they are right I acknowledge that and express my now enlightened and altered view with due respect to them. This conversation is useful to any observers but hiding the content under the carpet is simply evading facing the truth and perpetuates the erroneous perception. It is also extremely disrespectful. Since I composed a reply that I thought was a valuable consideration which I could not post because a person (who shall remain nameless at the moment) had removed the post I represent it here: A Person posted a link and said: I agree with quarantine policy. There is no other choice. theguardian/world/2014/oct/26/ebola-christie-quarantine-west-africa-monitor-symptoms-airport I commented: I am beginning to notice this phrase There is no other choice. uttered more and more. It is a denial of personal responsibility and an excuse for doing what we otherwise know is wrong. And A Person responded with: Sam, what alternative would you recommend for returning, exposed workers? So I composed a reply which I thought was useful: My point was about the phrase claiming no choice. It is predominantly used by people who wish to impose their perspective on other people when they know it is wrong. There IS a choice and that is the self-contradictory irony of the phrase. If, for example, you think it is the wrong thing to do then choose to do the wrong thing. Admit to yourself that it IS your choice. If you think it is the right thing the tendency, more often than not, is to claim responsibility for making the choice. More and more I hear this phrase rolled out by politicians as the vacuous excuse to do harm; We have no choice - we have to bomb them, There is no option we must cut the welfare budget etc but how often do we hear There is no choice - we have to help the poor or We have no option but to find a diplomatic solution? The reason I commented on the phrase and not the subject is because if one examines the otherwise uncomfortable interpretation one generally finds underlying and important issues which are being intentionally ignored. The subject of quarantine is not straightforward and there is every possibility (even likelihood) that various politicians are utilising the situation rather than addressing the underlying problems that give rise to the question in the first place. It is a dreadful thing that we choose to hold people culpable for their petty crimes on the grounds of their freewill whilst claiming no choice but to punish them. If there is a definition of sin it is self contradiction. - Søren Kierkegaard (I think). When I went to post it I got the following message from FookBase: The post or object you were commenting on has been removed by its owner and can no longer be commented on.
