It seems big families are becoming less and less common these days. People often question why we chose to have so many kids in a world that is becoming more and more anti-family. Socially, there are real pressures to limit the number of kids we bring into the world. Supposedly, children tie a mother down, interfere with a career, and hinder fulfillment. And I understand some of the questions. Yes, its expensive! Yes, its exhausting (#6 has pushed me to the edge at times)! Yes, it did a number on my body! Yes, theres less time for personal interests and hobbies! Yes, its hard to balance everything! But let me tell you something... motherhood has blessed and changed my life more than I could have EVER imagined. It has brought unmatched joy and love in abundance. It simply comes down to priorities and perspective. In my view, the family is central to Gods plan for His children. The entire purpose of this life is to grow, and learn to love others selflessly... the key to true joy. Yes, with more kids comes more potential heartache, frustration, and pain... but with more kids also comes the potential for more joy, more progress, more LIFE, all of which makes the struggle worthwhile. All these experiences good and bad build the character of each member of the family. This was summed up so beautifully by my friend Dawna Golden: Each phase of motherhood has had its own joys and challenges, but each one helped me to become a better person. I understand why having a family in this life is so important to Gods plan. It is through marriage and raising children that we learn some of the most important lessons in life. We get to practice on a daily basis things like: patience, service, repentance, and forgiveness. We learn to stick it out, to work through things, and to love. In order to learn these valuable lessons it means that yes, there were mistakes and frustrations. There was sadness, hurt feelings, and even anger. Therein lies the opportunity to grow and improve ourselves. How else can we learn to work through these human imperfections and become who we are intended to become? So in short, more kids= more opportunity for growth! If I could speak to young couples Id say... dont let our society discourage you from raising as many children as you feel is right for your family! Yes its hard, but it is WORTH IT!!!
