It seems to baffle me how some people cannot hear or recognize a flat or off key note, be it vocally or playing. Maybe I’m just blessed or maybe cursed to be able to hear the difference and want to, have to, correct it. I guess have to thank my long time gone, good friend Donnie for teaching me the difference. I didnt really know it at the time, and these days they call it “tough love”.. I thought more ridicule and cruel but he’d stop in the middle of a song and correct my vocal, point out the missed note, plucking his guitar string while saying “This is the note!,(pluck, pluck, pluck ) now sing it!..” then let out a deep appalled sigh and say .. “ok now let’s start again”.. he was tough and demanding but it taught me the difference and although at the time it was always a battle, I look back with a fondness for the lessons. I have to add my friend Donnie had what was as close to “perfect pitch” as anyone Ive ever known and I know it must have been such a burden in his life to listen to other play and sing, with his talent. But thankfully he did and I am grateful for his tolerance. I might add though part of his tolerance, understand and help was because he could not sing a note to save his own life, at least by picking me to play guitar with he was able to play and blame the vocals on me. So what is this rant all about?.. I went to a local Open Mic last night at what has to be the home of Lucifer himself. The Son of the Morning has gathered every flat, sour, out of tune and sharp player and vocalist in the greater Silicon Valley in one place on one night, and we suspiciously we were there too. I’m not sure why, maybe to understand, gain insight, perspective, or maybe just to torture me and show me that with the tinnitus coming on in my head, to be thankful for what I have and that things could be worse.. and for what’s coming I might, like some, have no excuses. Well as I contemplate this I have to remember what my mother taught me, “if you have nothing good to say, it’s better to say nothing at all”.. so…________. Thank you.
