Now that teaching does not come from the bible and just to kind of demonstrate the absurdity of that belief, we could re-imagine some classic scenes from scripture with that teaching inserted in the story. Moses goes up to the mountain side to get some advice from God and in the bible it says that God says ‘Tell the people to care for each other and to remember me and I will be faithful on to them.’ But imagine that God had said instead ‘Look Moses - I’m someone who helps someone who helps themselves. So out there in the wilderness it’s every man for itself OK?’ No, that teaching does not come from the bible, or from any religious tradition of any merit. It’s actually a quote from Benjamin Franklin but the fact that 75% of Americans think that the teaching comes from the bible suggests to me that perhaps, we, and not just Christians but all of us, are worshiping a God other than the one that we profess to worship.
