It turns out that, as a percentage of the money they pull in, ISPs have generally spent less on infrastructure over time — from a high of 37 percent of revenue in some cases to a low of around 12 percent more recently. - Brian Fung And yet prices to the consumer continue to go up. So if the increased revenues arent going toward infrastructure, where are they going? If you guessed profit, give yourself a pat on the back. In spite of that, we are continually told by Comcast, Verizon et al that infrastructure is just way too expensive and thats why we cant have nice things (such as a reliable, speedy Netflix data stream) on the Internet. And thats why theyre so sorry, but theyre going to have to cap you at X Gigabytes per month pretty soon because well, because they can. And thats also why they should be reclassified as utilities and common carriers and have their profits capped. They love to talk about the benefits of competition -- until they actually get some competition. And then they run to the municipality or state involved to insure that laws are passed or exclusive contracts let that prevent competition. And thats why prices in Europe for Internet connectivity go down every year while speed goes up: they have true competition there.
