It was a Sunday night in the fall of 2002 and my ex and I drove out to Brooklyn, MI to take a look at the two remaining pups from a litter. It was the day that marks a change in my life - the beginning of an adventure and a love for a breed. We had never intended to get two puppies, but they were the last two. We decided that they were a pair and we took them both. The were registered as Brooklyns Sunday Night Drive and Dougs Maple and Brown Sugar, but to everyone they would be Brooklyn & Maple. They were my world. They were a refuge when things got tough. They were my frisbee hounds. A year later, a happy-go-lucky Golden Retriever presented himself as a stray while on a hike in a local park. He was golden and coppery and he brought energy, fun, and a goofiness to our pack. His royal name would be Sharp Parks Copper Trot - Copper for short. Things were awesome in our piece of the world until last year. So today, marks a year since my sweet Brooklyn left out pack. He was the epitome of a velcro dog and lived in my shadow. He was a lover and a cuddlebug. If he could have lived inside my skin, I think he would have. He was vocal and voiced his opinion of when it was time for me to move and make room for him or when it was time to go to bed. He was anxious and nervous - I was constantly watching the weather and I could be in a different state or country and looking at the weather out of concern for his well being. He was handsome and muscular and sporting. He was my friend and I miss him. Soon, I will turn 42 and to this day I have never experienced such loss and grief like I did a year ago today. I am thankful for every moment I had with him. I know his spirit guided me to the fella my pack would rescue only 45 days later and for the reason Bradys royal name is Brooklyns Brady-Boy. I am thankful that out of loss came more love. I wish they could have known each other. So today, I take a moment to share my loss, my love, and my appreciation for a four legged pal that is dearly missed.
