It was an honour for my wife Dorette and I to attend the Australian Coptic Movement Association’s Coptic New Year Dinner in the presence of the Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon Tony Abbott MP, as well as many community elders at the Novotel Brighton Beach Hotel within my electorate of Barton over the weekend. This was an historic occasion for the strong Australian Egyptian community with the support and involvement of many Members of Parliament on both sides of politics. The Coptic Community is a close-knit and positive force within Australian public life and the focus of the evening on the plight of those suffering around the world was a strong reminder that in Australia diverse communities can be united in their shared desire for a fairer world. I thank the Australian Coptic Movement for their passion for justice and their organisation of a great night.
