It was brought to my attention recently that next month (November), will be the 30th Anniversary of when I composed Blest Are They and that GIA published it for the first time. Grateful... thank you to the people of St. Thomas Aquinas in St. Paul Park, MN (especially the Emmaus Contemporary Ensemble) where I served at the time and the little room in the basement of the parish Hall (B-9) where it was composed; to the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis when it was first sung beyond the parish at the Archdiocesan Faith Gathering (in the old Minneapolis Auditorium) that same year (and then later released on the Come and Journey recording); to Michael Joncas who wrote the descant (coming up with it on the spot when we were recording it in the studio for the To Be Your Bread recording) and to Jim Waldo who recommended the F minor chord on the repeat of the phrase on the refrain; to NPM when in Cincinnati in 1985 when it served the centerpiece song for a dramatic presentation on the Beatitudes created by Michael, Marty and myself; and most of all - for so many of the people of God who have been able to pray it over the years.... grateful. Rejoice and be glad!
