It was interesting to see the director tear up his old playbook in There Will Be Blood and The Master by tightening his focus, reducing the number of characters and curbing his wordier tendencies. (In those last two movies, there was no dialogue for roughly the first 20 minutes.) This looks a lot closer to the sprawling movies that made his name: Boogie Nights, Magnolia.
