It was really surprising. On my way from Gujarat to Delhi, after the breakfast, I happened to read Chetan Bhagat’s Column in Times. He, probably like to pave the way for someone in the same route – Gujrat to Delhi, en-cashing the righteousness of the middle class. Even if it is not intentional, this nonfiction from him has such a culminating impact. At this point we need not bother much about the politics, but for sure the writing needs some attention. In his note he addresses Indian middle class and names the poor the rest’, mocking the pro-poor policies of Indian National Congress or UPA Government led by them. Despite the inequalities in standards of life, he needs both (the rest and Indian middle class) to be treated equally. When most of the intellectuals are demanding more and more pro-poor policies, Mr. Bhagat demands ‘equality’. During the end of May, social activist Aruna Roy decided not to continue her association with the National Advisory Council Led by Sonia Gandhi on behalf of her disappointment on the deterrence of the Prime Minister’s Office to adopt Pro-poor strategies as recommended by NAC. Mrs. Roy told the press - Mrs Gandhi is fully convinced about the need to enhance the social policy of the government. I can tell you that she has great conviction that it is the governments job to include the poor and marginal in governments policies”, where on the same issue Mr. Bhagat has a different opinion. In fact I doubt whether Mr. Bhagat knows the condition of the marginalized in India. There was a senior doctor along with me in my coupe, who works with an NGO in population control sector. She told me a famous quote a night before I read Mr. Bhagat. “When it rains heavily, Indian cities are worried about traffic block and water logging, whereas the rural India rejoice in their agriculture field. When are these two countries going to unite?” Chetan Bhagat - the self-motivated advocate of the middle class India – is worried about the rain, he demands less rain, to address the demands of India and the rest of India equally and/or since even the middle class has a “right” to live. Isn’t it a joke?
