Its Christmas! Peace on Earth and goodwill to all men. Er, yes, Ill keep wishing but wont hold my breath too long - loved the Queens thought-provoking Christmas Day speech, tho. In the jazz world its that time of year for the VCJ to pull on their thermal Long Johns and layers of warm clothes to perform their annual outdoor fundraiser for The Sanderson Arcade, Morpeth. Sandersons local charity of choice this year is Barnabas Safe & Sound. Barnabas are a Morpeth-based charity providing supported accommodation for vulnerable young people between the ages of 16 - 25. They aim to prevent youth homelessness by supporting young people at risk and also promote youth development by offering positive activities, independent living skills, etc. Also in the week leading up to Christmas we always do a number of street theatre gigs for South Tynside Council by entertaining the Xmas shoppers on King Street in South Shields. Yesterday (Christmas Eve), as we were about to start our second 45 minute set, I suddenly lost my banjo plec. Searching around my feet on the pavement, I muttered, wheres my feckin plectrum!. Paul Gowland glanced across to me and said, its between your feckin teeth!. How the hell did it get there I wonder? As all guitarists and banjo players know, plecs can disappear in the blink of an eye - especially if theres an old beer-soaked Axminster carpet nearby. At the end of the King Street session we handed 2 large bags of miscellaneous coins to Marie Curie Cancer Care - donations given to the band by the kind children and shoppers of South Shields.
