Its World Listening Day! Everyone knows that learning Mandarin is all about the tones. Many words have the same sounds, but different tones. There are 4 main tones represented by different accent marks on the vowels: ā, á, ǎ, and à. The 1st tone starts high and stays high, the 2nd one starts lower and rises, the 3rd one scoops, and the 4th one starts high and ends low. For example, the word for drink is 喝, pronounced hē (1st tone), while the word and is 和 and pronounced hé (2nd tone). We asked our teacher Bree to say both words for us.
