Its all over the news - Melissa Rivers will be filing a wrongful death lawsuit because of her mother, Joans, unexpected death during a minor surgical procedure. The last story explained she is doing this because she wants answers. NOT because she is sure the drs. or medical assts or nurses or even the surgical center WERE WRONG, but because she knows something unexpected happened - with a tragic result - and she doesnt know why! THIS exact scenario happens daily. Cant tell you HOW many people we meet with each week who JUST WANT ANSWERS! They dont know why a loved died. They dont understand why they had a hysterectomy or had their colon removed (true stories!) and they just want an explanation. An explanation that SHOULD be given to them by the drs. The drs. who cared for them or their loved ones. However, they get ignored, blown off and dismissed and cant move on with their lives until they understand WHAT happened and why. MANY times there is NO LAWSUIT to be filed. There is no malpractice or negligence. There are just confused patients who want and deserve answers. IN this day and age, this should not be happening. But I can assure you, it happens regularly across the country. Many of these people would NOT even make it into our office if the dr. had JUST EXPLAINED what went on! So drs. - PLEASE open the lines of communication with your patients. Explain things - before during and after if necessary and THAT is what will prevent them from calling a lawyer. THAT is what will help me EASE my workload and come out from being buried under this pile! It will help EVERYONE involved.
