The waiting is over.....and shes in! We got word about twenty minutes ago that our youngest, Leslie, made the roster for the 2014-2015 edition of the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony! The AYWS is the honor wind ensemble for high school musicians in the Atlanta area, and draws participants from all over central Georgia. It provides a positive musical experience in an artistic environment for advanced instrumentalists in wind and percussion performance. As an ensemble, it is one of the most visible ambassadors of culture and youth performance for the city of Atlanta and state of Georgia. Were overwhelmed, to say the least. If someone had told me this was going to happen four years ago, when she was having a LOT of trouble getting anything out of a B flat clarinet, much less the contra alto clarinet shes playing now, I would have laughed. Shes worked hard at this, set her own goals, and decided this was where she wanted to be. I think having spent three weeks this past summer at Cannon Music Camp really helped her in this endeavor; many thanks to Doug Gantt and his son Ryan Gantt for the camp recommendation. Many thanks to Mr. Bill Melton, her middle school music teacher at Whitewater Middle School, who really helped her develop her skills, and Mrs. Marcia Davis, her former counselor at Encore Band Camp, who works with her now on an individual basis. First concert is October 13th, with the Georgia State University Wind Ensemble - ought to be something to watch! Well keep you posted!
